Photography Camp ‘24

Look, point, click. Photography is such an accessible and satisfying art medium for young children. Our 12th annual Photography Camp was a “shuttering” success. For the first week of this two-week camp, the children are simply supplied with cameras. They are given minimal instructions and no suggestions or examples.

To foster a respectful and responsible approach to photography, we emphasize the importance of consent. Our budding photographers learned to ask permission before capturing someone's image, instilling a sense of ethics from the start.

After the first free-form week of experimentation, reflection and collaboration, in the second week we gently introduce building blocks of photography: lighting, composition, and different photographic styles. By exploring a diverse range of photography books, we inspired our young artists to experiment with new techniques and strive for their desired photographic outcomes.

More than just a captivating art form, photography offers a unique window into children's interests and aptitudes. It’s an elegant tool for educators to uncover and nurture individual strengths. Through the lens of a camera, we can gain fascinating insights into a child’s intellectual profile.

Children with a keen interpersonal intelligence often gravitate towards capturing the essence of human connection, their photographs are filled with portraits and candid moments. Those with a deep appreciation for the natural world are drawn to the beauty of the outdoors, producing images that celebrate the nature’s wonders. And for those with a budding engineer's mind, their camera zeros in on mechanics and structures, inspiring photographs that highlight inner workings, details and patterns.

Celebrating each child’s innate curiosity and creativity through photography, we empower them to become confident observers and expressive communicators. Photography Camp is more than just artistic fun; it’s a journey of self-discovery. As our young photographers develop their skills, they also develop and share with us a deeper understanding of the world around them and their place within it.
